Pop culture in critical language awareness
Philip Chan
Abstract
The move towards a knowledge-based economy propelled by
the advances in information technology and the mass media
is impacting on the curriculum, particularly EFL. To compete
in the global community, students need to learn beyond
the confines of the textbooks and classroom -- with an
ability to read not only the word but also the world,
in the context where English has become a vehicle of pop
culture, the branding of consumer products, and the password
of a cosmopolitan identity. This paper analyses the use
of English in pop culture: to mediate values, shape lifestyles,
represent ‘reality’, and construct identities. It explores
ways of developing critical thinking and language awareness
through a set of written and visual texts with learning
tasks that have been tried out. The seminar seeks to make
learning English creative and pleasurable.
