Second, many older students from my middle school were admitted to Hebei university. When they came back to my middle school, they told me a lot about this university, and I was very impressed, so I wanted to come to this university too.
When I filled out the application form, I learned that Hebei University is the only comprehensive university in Hebei province, so I think it is the best university in the province. Ⅱ. Campus Life校园生活
1.What do you think of Hebei University?
Model
Hebei University, is one of the top universities, and the only comprehensive university in Hebei province. I love Hebei University very much for the following reasons:
First, it offers a variety of courses covering a wide range of fields, including liberal arts, science and technology, engineering, medicine, and many others
Second, the teaching faculty is well known for its intellectual vigor, and there are many professors and experts in different fields. So I can learn more in this university than in others.
Third, our university has an attractive setting, with quite a few parks. In fact, the whole school is like a big park. ?
Fourth, there are excellent facilities in the university, such as on-line library, tennis and basketball courts, a campus hospital, and supermarket. Fifth, we have many students associations here; there is a place for everyone. ?Finally, I am not just learning information from books, I am also learning how to be a man. So I like it very much. I hope Hebei University will become one of the top universities in China.
2.Do you live on campus or off campus? Why?
Model 1
I live on campus for 3 reasons. First, it’s cheap and safe. Second, I can take advantage of many learning resources, such as the library, and English corner. Finally, dormitory life encourages me to communicate more with my roommates, so I make more friends, and I think friendship in college is very precious in life.
Model 2
I live off campus. Because, there are too many people in the dorm, which makes it difficult for me to concentrate on my studies. I like to be quiet, so I live off campus. But I think the most important thing is that I like to study alone and stay up late, so I need a much quieter and freer place than the dormitories.
3.How many people are there in your dormitory? Can you get along well with each other?
Mode l
There are 8/6 people in my dormitory. We get along very well with each other, like sisters( brothers). We often help each other whenever we are in difficulty; we share our happiness, our sadness and our pleasure. Although we come from different places, the dorm life makes us feel we are in a big family.
4.Do you enjoy your campus life?
Model
Yes, I enjoy it very much. My teachers are knowledgeable and humorous, so my classes are very cool. For our leisure time, we have a lot of activities, like organized sports, dance parties, English corner, internet association, music ear, and skating match. I can get better at all of my favorite hobbies and I can make many friends at the different activities. What’s more, it is very convenient to live on campus, we have many facilities, such as a hospital, supermarket, bath house, tennis and basketball court, and several dining halls.? In the dining-hall, they offer various dishes, and even if I miss the dining time, they offer snacks and refreshments. Campus life is great!
5.What facilities do you have in your university?
Model
There are many good facilities for both our living and study. The different living facilities include: a hospital, supermarket, bath house, and several dining halls in different yards of our school. Also, in our dorm, we have cable TV, so we can get to know about important affairs both at home and abroad. And we have telephone in our dormitory, which makes it convenient for us to call our parents.?? Our university is full of beautiful scenery. There are several parks in both the south and north yards. Sometimes in the morning, I go to the park to practice my English while enjoying the beautiful flowers and trees. The track and basketball courts are very cool because they are made of plastic, and my friends and I often play basketball there.
There are also many learning facilities. The school library offers many books for us students, and has an on-line service which I like very much; we can borrow and read books on-line. Also there are online English courses, and we have quite a few language labs to have English classes in.
6.What do you think of the food in the school canteen?
Model
Delicious! There are several dining halls in our university, so we have many choices as to where to eat. We are afforded many kinds of dishes and staple foods(主食). The tables, chopsticks, spoons and dishware are very clean. What’s more, the price is reasonable, just right for us students. So I prefer to eat here rather than dining out.
7.Can you watch TV in your dorm? Is watching TV helpful to your learning?
Model 1
We have cable TV in our dorm, so it’s very convenient to watch TV.
Yes, I think it’s helpful. I often watch the news reports, the English Channel, and the legal report at noon. News can let us know about current affairs both at home and abroad, and I can improve my English by watching the English programs. But, we should watch the TV programs selectively, we shouldn’t spend all our time watching TV.
Model 2
No, I don’t think it’s helpful. Watching TV can distract us from our study, and it takes up a lot of our time. Especially when we watch a TV series, it is hard for us to go back to our study.?? So I don’t like to watch TV.
8.What do you usually do in your spare time?
Model
Usually, my spare time is divided into two parts: study time and leisure time. In my study time, I prefer to review what I have just learned and then go to the reading room to read some magazines in the library. In my leisure time, I prefer to surf the internet or listen to the music or play sports with my friends. Sometimes, I take part in some sports competitions to have fun.
9.s it convenient for you to borrow books from library? Do you often borrow books?
Model
Yes, it is very convenient. Each one of us has a library card with which we can borrow books. We can borrow+数字+ books for one month, if we can’t finish reading them we can renew them for another month. What’s more, there is an on-line service in the library, so we can check out or renew our books wherever we have internet access. I often borrow books. Because college years are very precious for us, we must make full use of the four years to read and learn, in order to prepare for our future. There are large collections of books in our library, so I want to learn as much as I can during my four years at university. If I don’t take advantage of the library, I will regret it.
10. As a college student, how do you learn to be independent?
Model
The college years are a time for us to develop independence both economically and spiritually.
First, I should learn to evaluate myself correctly, knowing what my strengths and weaknesses are. I should also reflect on myself by asking questions like "Why did I come to the university?" or "What kind of person do I want to be in the future?" In this way, I can understand myself well and can adjust to new environments easily.
Second, I think I should learn how to get along well with others. In university, study is not the only objective, besides learning from books, we have to learn how to communicate with others and how to deal with personal relationships. Therefore, when I communicate with my classmates, I should be honest, modest, and considerate. When there is conflict, I should deal with it calmly.
Third, I should develop my ability to learn and live independently. In study, I should think and learn actively and independently instead of following others. Meanwhile, I should arrange my time properly, knowing what I should and should not do.
I am sure during these four college years, I will learn what I need to become an independent person.
11. Is it convenient for you to get on-line on campus?
Model
In our university, we can get on-line very conveniently. Both in north and south yards, we have specific classrooms to get on-line. The rooms are very large, and seats are available easily. If you have a PC, you can get on-line in your own dormitory. We can get a lot of information from internet and learn a lot from it.
12. Do you often surf the net?
Model
I often surf the net if I have time.
Usually I surf the net in order to talk with my parents and my friends. Through QQ or MSN, I tell them all the things happened around me. My parents can understand me easily and quickly. With my friends, talk about what we are doing, thinking, or make plans to do something together. We are free to talk about whatever we like.
I also surf the net in order to enrich my knowledge of the world. I can get a lot of information from the net and learn about the most advanced science in the world, which can broaden my horizons.
And sometimes, I will shop online. ?I can buy books, clothes, CDs and other things I am interested in. Because on-line shopping doesn’t cost much, there are many things available, and I don’t have to even leave my room/campus, shopping online is pleasant for me.
13. Say something about your school's history or culture.
Model
Hebei University, is one of the top universities in Hebei Province. It is situated in Baoding, a city with a long history and rich cultural heritage in China, within easy access of Beijing. Hebei University was founded in Tianjin in 1921. Since its foundation, Hebei University has undergone successive changes in its name. It used to be Tianjin Industrial & Commercial Institute. It later became Jingu College, then Tianjin Normal School, and Tianjin Normal University for a while. In 1960, it was transformed into a comprehensive university with its current name Hebei University. Then in 1970, it was moved to Baoding.
14. What is the motto of your university?
Model
Motto: Seeking Truth from Facts, Studying Profoundly Behaving Honestly.
校训:实事求是 笃学诚行
Ethos: Learning Extensively, Penetrating Courageously, Pursuing Permanently, Innovating Constantly.
校风:博学,求真, 唯恒, 创新
Interpretation: We should be practical and realistic, seeking truth from facts. As students, we should be devoted to our study and be sincere and honest, never telling lies.
15. Do you often take part in sports on campus?
Model
Yes, I often take part in sports. In my opinion, physical health is quite important for our study. Without health, we can do nothing, so I often do morning exercises. I often go running in early morning. We have a very good track on campus, while jogging, I can also listen to the radio to get more information about current affairs and also I can listen to English while running.
16. What sports do you like most?
Model
I like many sports. The ball games I like are basketball, football, volleyball, tennis, and table tennis, etc. Besides ball games, I also like running or jogging. Running is one of the traditional sports, it costs us nearly nothing except a pair of shoes. Of these sports, my favorite is table tennis. As the national ball game, table tennis is part of Chinese life. Playing table tennis not only helps us keep healthy, but it also develops our reflexes and coordination. Playing table tennis can also improve our friendship with our opponent, and develop our sense of competition as well.??
Other alternatives:
boxing,bungee jumping,canoeing,cricket,cycling, fencing,figure skating,golf,gymnastics,handball,hockey,ice hockey,ice skating,judo,motor racing,mountain climbing,water polo,…
17. If you were a volunteer for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, what would you do?
Model
I wish I could be a volunteer for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. If I were a volunteer, ?I would like to contribute a lot to the Olympics:
First, I would try my best to disseminate knowledge about the Olympics to attract more people to join in the Olympic activities.
Second, I would take a service job, such as tour guide or interpreter, to help the foreign travelers understand Chinese culture well.
I hope through my work, more and more people would learn much more about the Olympics, more and more people would carry forward the spirit of the Olympics. And I think that because of the Olympics, we can learn more about the world, while the world learns more about China.?
18. Would you please tell sth about the Olympics?
Model
History: According to historic records, the first ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC. They were dedicated to the Olympian Gods. (据历史记载,第一届古代奥运会可以追溯到公元前776年,为纪念奥林匹亚神而举行。)
The ancient Games were held at four-year interval, and occupied an important position in the life of the Greeks. ?The winners would get the ultimate prize: an olive wreath and a "heroic" return to their city-states. But apart from the glorious victory, it was the Olympic values themselves which accorded special meaning to the Games: noble competition and the effort to combine body, will, and mind in a balanced whole.(古代奥运会在古希腊人的生活中占据了很重要的地位。胜者获得一个橄榄花圈和“英雄”般的返乡。除去胜利的光荣,奥林匹克价值本身赋予了奥运会特殊的意义:高尚竞争,把身体、意志和精神平衡的结合于一体。 )
Motto of the Olympics:? Swifter, higher, stronger(更快,更高,更强)
The most important thing at the Olympic Game is not to win, but to take part, for the essential in life is not to conquer but to fight well.
奧运精神,志在参与,不在乎胜利,正如人生,志在奋斗,不在乎征服。)

III. Study 学习情况
1.What’s your major? Do you like it?
句型: My major is…( I am majored in…). I like it very much (I don’t like it at all).(reasons)
Model
My major is Business Administration. I am especially interested in marketing. ?I am outgoing, extroverted, I like travel and, get along well with people. Marketing enables me to meet many different kinds of people. Also I will go to a lot of places to establish markets. And I will happily take the opportunity to travel.
2.How much do you know about your major in Hebei University?
Model
My major is history. It is well known that the study center of Song Dynasty is quite famous in our university, and in Hebei province. I like history, so I chose it as my major. I think the study of history makes us know more about our civilization, and the processes through which society develops.
3.How many courses do you have this term? What are they?
Model
I have taken ____ courses, they are________
4. What’s your favorite subject?
Model 1
English. I am interested in learning English.? I learn a lot in my College English class, and improve my ability to communicate in English. Nowadays, we are getting more and more opportunities to communicate with foreigners, so it is necessary to improve our English. Through this course, I also get to know a lot about western culture, some of which is really interesting. I am also interested in English movies and English songs, with better English, I can enjoy them more. So learning English is both useful and entertaining for me.
Model 2
History. People say that learning history can make people wiser. In this class I learn more about our country, nationality, and the world. This knowledge makes me love my country and make greater contribution to the world.
Model 3
PE. I love sports. I can do various sports in this course, which not only makes me stronger and happier, but also enables me to make more friends. I have to attend a lot of classes every week, and the PE class is relaxing to me. This class is helpful in making both my body and spirit healthier.
Model 4
Computers. Now we are in an age of internet, we can do lots of things through internet, such as reading the news, learning English, taking exams, getting useful information, and making friends. And it is necessary to learn about computers. Computers are getting more and more popular, meanwhile, the computer viruses are also becoming a common pest, through this course, I not only learn many useful computer skills, but also learn some methods to avoid being attacked by those computer viruses.
5. Do you like learning English? How do you learn English?
Model
I learn a lot in my College English class, and improve my ability to communicate in English. Nowadays, we are getting more and more opportunities to communicate with foreigners, so it is necessary to improve our English. Through this course, I also get to know a lot about western culture, some of which is really interesting. I am also interested in English movies and English songs, with better English, I can enjoy them more. So learning English is both useful and entertaining for me.
I think the best way to learn English is to practice. Practice makes perfect. Every morning, I spend an hour in reading English passages in the garden. By reading, I have enlarged my vocabulary and improved my pronunciation and intonation. I also try to broaden my horizons by finding reading materials other than text books, such as English newspapers and magazines. I also practice my listening by watching English movies and listening to English songs. Also I go to the English corner to practice my oral English. I have made many friends there, including some foreign friends. Of course, the most important thing is that I have to attend every English class, and listen carefully to my teacher. Moreover, finishing the assignments is necessary. I made a great effort in learning English.
6. Do you like your English teacher?
Model
Yes, our English teacher is kind and helpful. His/ Her oral English is excellent and his/her detailed explanation is easy to understand. He/She is always helpful, always patiently helps us whenever we have problems. Moreover, our English teacher is quite diligent, he/she checks our homework carefully and corrects every mistake we make. Thanks to him/her, my English is improved rapidly. We love the English class, because it is always interesting, the atmosphere is lively, and we can learn a lot from our teacher.
7. What’s the difference between learning English in middle school and in college?
Model 1
College English focuses more on practical usage. In college, our purpose of learning English is no longer passing exams, instead, we need to learn more?? to improve our communication skills and enable us to learn more about cultures of western countries, so that we can communicate better with foreign friends.
Model 2
There is more emphasis on oral English in college English. Since our main task in middle school was to prepare for the University Entrance Examination, we were not paying enough attention to the listening and oral English, so we were weak in these aspects. In college, things have changed, we have to do a lot to improve our listening and speaking. I’d like to do that, I do think this is helpful and necessary.
Model 3
In college English, we are paying less attention to grammar. Our teacher told us that we have learned all the grammar we needed in middle school, so grammar was not the most important part in college English. But sometimes, when we have some problems with grammar, our college English teacher also explains it for us.
Model 4
We depend more on ourselves to learn in college. We had English class everyday in the middle school, and the teacher was always urging us to learn. But in college, we have fewer classes; we need to learn more by ourselves. It is more convenient for us to learn now, as we can rely on the internet, where we can find all kinds of useful information. And if we have any problem, we can turn to our teacher for help.
8. How does your English teacher organize the class? How much can he/she use English in teaching? Describe some teaching-methods your English teacher uses in teaching.
Model
Our English teacher always tries to make our class student-centered. Instead of always speaking by himself/herself, my teacher would like us to participate more in the class. He/She organized many activities for us, during which we can practice collecting information, cooperative learning, oral English, etc. Our teacher also gives us help when necessary.
Our English teacher speaks English most of the time, only when we have problems in understanding, would he/she speak some Chinese to explain. He/ She also uses Chinese to explain some difficult grammar.
We often have group discussions, role-play, and give presentations. In group discussion, first, the teacher asks us to discuss a given topic in small groups made up of 3-4 people, after about 10 minutes, the teacher would asks each group to choose a person as the representative to make a presentation. Then, the teacher makes some comments and mentions some other information we didn’t mention. Sometimes, we role-play. The teacher assigns a topic. Our class is divided into groups or in pairs. After our preparation, the teacher would ask some of us to present our play in the front of the classroom.
9. What activities do you usually do in your English class?
Model
1) Group Discussion: First, the teacher asks us to discuss a given topic in small groups made up of 3-4 people, after about 10 minutes, the teacher would asks each group to choose a person as the representative to make a presentation. Then, the teacher makes some comments and mentions some other information we didn’t mention.
2) Role-play: The teacher would ask us to make up a dialog on a certain topic in small groups, and we have about 10 minutes to practice. Then, some of the groups get opportunities to act it out in front of the class. The teacher would make some comments and praise those who had done a good job.
10. What’s most interesting part of learning English?
Model 1
1) I think the most interesting part of learning English is oral English. By practicing, I can improve my communication with native speakers of English. This makes me feel successful. In order to improve oral English, I also have to learn about western cultures, too. They are rather different from our traditional culture. Knowing more and more, I feel that my view has been broadened.
Model 2
I like reading the most. I love reading books, stories and novels are really interesting to me. By improving my reading skills, I can understand some books written in English. And when reading them, I find that my reading skill is also improved. That’s amazing to me, and I have begun to love reading more now.
11. Do you have any difficulties in learning English? How do you deal with them?
Model 1
It is really difficult to remember the innumerable words and phrases. I spent a lot of time on them, but I always forget them. It is a natural rule that we forget the things we are trying to remember. But forgetting is also an indication that we are not making enough effort. So I not only spend a lot of time in memorizing them, but also try to review them. Gaining a better understanding of these words is also important, so when I’m learning a certain word, I refer to some example sentences, and do some practice exercises. In this way, I get stronger impression of the meaning and usage of this word.
Model 2
I have difficulty with grammar. I think grammar is rather boring, it is difficult for me to understand it, let alone be interested in it. My teacher told me that I can improve this by reading more, because reading can make us get a sense of how to make sentences, meanwhile, we can learn the rules in those sentences, and it would be easier for us to understand them. I have done many exercises on grammar. I found this helpful, too.
Model 3
I have difficulty with oral English. I always feel that my oral English is poor, and dare not to speak in front of people. In order to improve my oral English rapidly, I spend a lot of time on this. Every morning, I get up early, and practice reading English on campus. I listen to some tapes and try to follow the recording to correct my pronunciation. I collect many materials, such as VOA news, poems, songs, dialogs from movies, etc. and try to imitate good pronunciation and intonation. Moreover, on every weekend evening, I go to the English corner to practice talking to people. Sometimes, I meet some foreigners there, and I seize every opportunity to talk to foreigners because I can always benefit a lot by practicing my English with them. I even made some foreign friends there. Now I’m glad that my oral English is much better now.
12. How can you get contact with your teacher after class if you have any question?
Model
There are many ways for us to contact our teacher. We have our teacher’s telephone number. We can call him/her when we have problems. We also have a forum for discussion on the internet, if we have any problem, we can discuss it there, where my teacher and classmates will supply help in time. We also send e-mails to our teacher to communicate with him/her.
13. What’s your idea about CET4 and 6?
Model
In most colleges, passing CET-4 is compulsory for students to receive their diplomas, while CET-6 is optional, not compulsory. So many students just focus on the former test. I don’t agree with this approach, because the final purpose of my studying in college is not merely to get a diploma, but to enrich myself with knowledge, to increase my ability and to shape my personality.
14. How can learning English benefit you most?
Model
I have learned English for some years now. From learning English, especially in college, I have learned some things about other countries including their cultures and customs. It has enriched my mind. I think English is very important. I can communicate with foreigners and we also integrate English much more into our learning and work on professional subjects than we have in the past. English is becoming a part of daily life around the world.
15. How do you prepare for English class? Do you do any preparation work?
Model
Before the English class, usually I do some preparation work in advance. First, I get familiar with the new words and phrases, and then read the new text to find the main idea and try to understand each sentence. If I find some strange words, I will underline them and ask help from my teacher and classmates. Nowadays we can do independent-learning on line. Using websites, we can find definitions of any new words, language points, reading and writing skills and the answer keys to exercises.
16. Do you often practice your oral English? How?
Model
Yes, I usually practice my oral English in class and after class. In class, we have a lot of chances to discuss a certain question or topic with a partner or other group members. And then share our personal ideas with other classmates. Also my English teacher often introduces some interesting activities, such as role-playing, dialogues, and debates, in which we practice our oral English with more enthusiasm. After class, I often talk with my partner, one of my roommates, in English. Sometimes I go to English Corner. And the most exciting thing is to participate in the students oral English Contest.
17. Besides learning English in class, do you have any optional English courses in your university? Have you ever taken any?
Model
English is a very interesting subject. I like it very much. There are some optional English courses in my university, such as English reading skills, practical writing, culture and communication, and advanced listening and speaking. The English Movie course is my favorite. I love watching movies very much, especially American movies. In the class, I enjoy the beautiful scenery, charming movie stars, and foreign cultures. Watching movies, I have learned a lot of oral English and widened my worldview.
18. Among the English skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating), which one do you think is most important? How do you develop these skills?
Model
It requires many skills to learn English well. Among these skills, it is difficult to say which one is most important, because these skills can not be separated from each other. Learning English well requires the integration of these skills.
How do I develop these skills? First, I practice, a lot. Practice makes perfect. Second, our English teacher helps us improve our skills in the classroom, and then I practice the skills by doing more listening, reading, writing and translating exercises outside of class. As for speaking, I often imitate recordings from our textbook, and that works for improving my pronunciation and intonation. I also go to the English corner to really use my oral English.

Model
Nowadays with the development of modern society, more and more things from society fascinate us. But as a student, as far as I am concerned, it is more important to learn knowledge from books. In a modern society, competition is getting fiercer and fiercer. So we should learn more book knowledge to broaden our horizons. Only in this way can we meet the challenge. After we graduate, we have enough time to learn from society.

I have a habit of getting up early. Every morning, I practice my reading aloud especially English reading. I have had this habit for more than 6 years.?? Whatever subjects and courses, I always prepare before class. While in class, I tend to take notes. I am always involved in classroom discussion and answer questions actively. In the evening and at night, I often review what I have learned in the classroom. After all the assignments and review work, I often find some related learning material to enrich my education. For example, in my free time, I often read some English newspapers and listen to English broadcasts such as the VOA. I think my study habits are quite scientific and quite helpful, and that they will be useful in my future life.

Here is the library of our university, where I often go to read newspapers, periodicals and borrow books. I can get almost all kinds of books I need. It’s of great help to my study.???
This is the Yuxiu Garden, the biggest garden, of our university. It is located on the south campus. In my opinion, this is the most beautiful part of this campus. It’s not far from our dormitory building, so when I feel tired I can take a walk with my friends. Looking at the plants makes me feel happy and relaxed. In the morning, I would like to do some reading there; the quiet and relaxing environment can help me memorize words efficiently.
Some of the students even have birthday parties in this garden, they play guitar and sing songs there, this makes me feel that college life is so wonderful.
This is the Jingxue Teaching Building (No.1), it is located in the north campus of our university. It has 6 floors, the main color of it is white/gray and the 6th floor is red, so it looks like a lady with a red hat, reminding me of the story of “little red hood ”.I heard that it is one of the buildings with a long history in our university, so I think it is a little out of fashion, but it is also one of the buildings that we have most of our classes.
We have English class in this building. The computer labs and sound labs are first-class; every student has get access to a computer. I am greatly impressed by the facilities and the learning atmosphere of the building.
V. On-line learning网络教学
1.Do you have web-based teaching?
Yes. After having entered Hebei University, I experienced with a fresh new web-based teaching and learning environment; I was very impressed a lot. The computers and the new learning method impact me very much. To be frank, it took me a quite long period to get used to the new teaching approach. Anyway, we feel lucky to have this web-based learning.
2. What courses are taught on-line?
For many subjects such as English, Chinese, and mathematics, we have access to teaching resources online, we can ask and answer questions, communicate with the teachers and classmates, etc. Autonomy on-line learning is an indispensable part of our English course.
3. How do you have your English on-line learning? (与第5题重复)
Usually I prepare for class beforehand. I read the text carefully, recite the new words and mark the point that I don’t catch on to. Then I do the exercises in the book. When I have the course, first I log in the New Horizon web site and check the unit’s task list given by the teacher.
Sometimes I do the Reading and writing practice. First I listen to the text and new words to correct my pronunciation. Then I read the usage and example sentences of the new words and expressions. After this I try to grasp the text by reading the translation and analysis, at the same time finding out the answers to my questions that I encountered during my preparation. Finally I submit my answers to the exercises and do the correction.
Sometimes I do the Viewing, Listening& Speaking part. I listen to each audio portion twice and then do the exercise on the book. Sometimes I would listen to the material once again to make sure I get the main idea.
For every unit the teacher will upload some learning materials to the website, exercises, learning skills, supplement materials, etc. We can either look at them on-line or download them if time is limited. They are of great help.
If I have questions concerning the lesson or the computer, I can ask the teacher for help through the BBS on the New Horizon web site or ask him/her in person.
4. What is the function or role of your English teacher when you are learning English on-line?
The teacher is not only a supervisor, but also a helper. He / She can provide help when we run into difficulties, including problems of English learning, computer operating, and so on. Usually, we can ask questions in two ways: on line and in person. Then the teacher gives feed back very soon. Also, the teacher offers good guidance.
5. Does your teacher have any requirements for your online learning?
Yes, of course. Before we begin our autonomous study class, our English teacher has already put the? checklists on line, which cover the learning objectives and the main tasks in a unit. We are supposed to finish the tasks before we have class, because the teacher will check what we have learned. And if we do not prepare, we may have difficulty doing the assigned activities.
6. Can you discipline yourself when you are learning on-line?
At the beginning it was really hard for me to concentrate on English learning because, there’re a lot of temptations online. Luckily the teacher teaches us some strategies for autonomous learning. Now I know now how to make my own plan and how to schedule my time well. While working, we can visit nothing but the web site of English learning. Otherwise, I’m not sure whether I could arrange my time in the multiple-media classroom very well.
- What do you usually do in your on-line learning class?
Normally prior to my on-line learning class, my English teacher offers us a checklist to give us some instruction and learning task, according to it I’ll work out my personal learning-plan. Most of the time I listen to the materials of the viewing, listening and speaking textbook, prepare the tasks given by the teacher, exchange ideas with classmates and teachers on the discussion forum to ask and answer questions, do the reading/listening practice or test online. I also set some time to solve the vocabulary and phrases problems, taking reference from the on-line resources, correct my pronunciation and imitate the tones of the native speakers.
- Do you have any difficulties or troubles in on-line learning? What troubles you most?
Definitely yes. When fresh new objects first appeared we reject them instinctively, Online learning is totally new to me, there are so many resources I find that though each time I got my learning plan, it’s still so difficult to set priorities, the more the materials are, the more difficulties I would have in my study. Always in the anxiety the bell rings. What troubles most is how to allow no intrusions to my on-line study. Taking on-line searching as an example, each time I’ll determine to concentrate just on my subject, while after one or two hours sitting in front of computer, surely I’m lost, what is my initial aim?
- Do you like on-line English learning?
It’s a quite difficult question to answer for every coin has two sides. As a university student, to some extent, I’d admit that I prefer on-line English learning. Firstly, the exam-oriented time is out of date, we are emphasizing on the quality education, the reform is necessary and inevitable. Secondly, becoming a university student means we are getting nearer to the society, here, ability ranks first. What we should master” is not “what to learn but how to learn” , the self-learning ability will accompany us all our lives. I am amazed to see there are so many ways to learn English effectively.
Though I’ve been aware of the importance of on-line English learning, I still can not accept it in my deep heart. We’ve get used to the study/class under teachers’ control, adjusting to the new form needs time. Finding the points is the first problem and self-control comes after.
- What (How) can you benefit from on-line learning? (与第11题重复)
I think on-line classes have some strong features. Firstly, it enables every student to learn according to his/her specific needs and styles. A student can sign on at any hour of the day or night, taking part at times that best fit his or her schedule. Secondly, an enormous amount of information is available to us. We find it helpful to download or print out pages so that you can refer to them at other times or work away from the computer. Thirdly, Various online educational environments are now available for instructors to provide online support to their classes. Although online courses are unlikely to ever replace physical classrooms, they can provide valuable resources for instructors to enrich the course and engage the students' active participation in learning. I think that both instructors and students can benefit from the selection of appropriate and effective online tools for education.
- Does your teacher offer you supplementary learning material when you have on-line learning?
Yes. Our teacher usually provides useful and interesting materials on our on-line courses. Before each class, our teacher gives us a checklist on the discussion board for the text that we’re going to learn. In our on-line learning classes our teacher often puts some English learning material such as some learning tips about the band-4/6, some exercises, some cultures, poems, and some useful websites and so on. And our teacher also encourages us to find some useful material in all aspects and put it on the discussion board and we can also express our own opinions in order to let the entire students share.
- What do you think of the credit system in on-line learning?
I think it allows for the differences among students and can enhance students’ competitive sense in the society so that students would be stimulated to learn English. At the same time, the credit system can also let students choose the teacher they like and at the same time it can diversify the teachers’ teaching methods so that both the teacher and students can benefit from it.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of on-line learning?
The advantages are that the students may have a much wider rage of choices to learn beyond what they can find in the textbooks, and they can freely arrange their time to finish the exercises and learn more, since they may surf on the Net anytime. In a meantime, on-line learning is a fresh-new way of learning. Students may like it more than the traditional one.
The disadvantages are that some students may find it difficult to start with, since some may not have good access to the Net before their college life, and that they may depend too much on those references, which they can easily get, and they may communicate with the teacher less about their problems.
- Computer is becoming more and more important in learning English; does that mean that the teacher’s role is becoming less and less important?
Of course not. They can find rich information on line, but it would be difficult for them to know the focus, since the Net offers a quite large range of knowledge, which could be too much for their time. The teacher will also be the one to keep them in the right direction and monitor them to make sure that every one concentrates upon the English-learning-related resources, because the Net is also a great attraction to distract students from study.
- Please express briefly your opinions about the multi-media and web-based college English course.
It’s fresh new, and we like it very much. We feel great fun when learning English while surfing on the Web. And we are amazed to see that there are so many ways to study English. It’s interesting and very effective. Whenever we find inconvenient, we would turn to the teachers, we know that there is at least still another way. Now, because of this, I like English more.
VI. Employment 就业
- How do you prepare for job-hunting?
I think job-hunting will be the first challenge in my life. I prepare for job –hunting not only from the study but also psychologically and physically. It is very difficult to find a job today, so I must make full psychological preparation in case I am refused. Of course, to find a job perhaps I would have several interviews a day, so a good physical condition is necessary.?
Specifically, I will:
1. Keep being in contact with my friends who have graduated and become successful job hunters. They are not only experienced advisers but also they, as well as their network colleagues can serve as a tremendous resource, which I can make full use of.
2. Consider their priorities. Make sure the institutions and locations where you apply for jobs are ones you are comfortable with. For example, where the city locates, in the North or in the South, in Beijing, Shenzhen, or Shijiazhuang.
3. Be a student with competence and learning. I will graduate two years later. There is every need for me to treasure time and go all out to equip myself as a person of high quality. Gain knowledge of possible subjects, especially improve my English, being a learner not only getting high marks but also being able to use it as a tool to communicate with others in various activities.
- What is your ideal job?
I hope I can find a job that is related to my major and by which I can fulfill my potential. Interest is also important. If I am interested in some job, I will try my best to do it well. Of course, salary is also an important factor.
As a teacher:
My ideal job is to be a teacher.
First, being teacher is my dream. All my teachers treated me very well and they were clever. When I was a little child I found being a teacher was very interesting. Then, I like to stay with students all day long. the students are very sunny and lovely. I believe I would be very happy to be a teacher.
As an art manager::
My ideal job position would be in arts management. I'm quite interested in music but I'd like to broaden my perspective a bit and see what other worlds of music are out there. I've taken all sorts of lessons and so I feel confident that I could manage and work with all of the different instrumentalists and vocalists.
?As a psychologist:
As far as my ideal job is concerned, I think I want to be a psychologist. I have made up my mind to do what I really want to so that I can realize my ideal. I believe interest is of the utmost importance in choosing a job. I have been interested in psychology for a long time, so I want to be a psychologist in the future. I think being a psychologist can help lots of people lead a happier life.
However, it isn't easy for me to become a qualified psychologist and many people around me think that it's unrealistic for me. Nevertheless, I'll make every effort to gain much more knowledge, patience, methods, etc. I believe my dream will come true someday.
- It is more and more difficult to find a good job, what would you do in order to find a good job?
? To find a good job, first, I would set up self-confidence and overcome some shortcomings in my personality. Second, I would work hard to make myself an all-round person. Third, I would take part in some social activities or do some part-time jobs to improve my social experience.
- If you are going to have an interview, what kind of preparation would you make?
??? Nowadays competition becomes tough for graduates. If you want to get a descent job, an interview is of great importance to any applicant. I think the key to a successful job interview is “sound preparation”. So if I’m going to have an interview, first, I will pay attention to my appearance, neither flourish nor too fashionable, but dressed in good taste. I know the first impression is where we start. Second, I will get to know the job I’m going to take up through reading related materials or scanning website just to confirm the credibility of the company and its working conditions and also to evaluate its future prospect. Thirdly, I will forecast some answers of questions which may be asked by interviewers. Besides, I will practice my speaking in front of a ?mirror.?
- What are the most important qualities should college students acquire?
??? I think there are two most important qualities college students should acquire. One is that college students should learn how to combine their specialty with practice well after graduation. After all, what the books tell us compared to the reality does not always work; there are lots of unpredictable factors that can’t be foreseen. So college students should take advantage of opportunities to put themselves into real life and learn how to deal with some real problems. The other is that college students should learn how to successfully live in the society. That is to say, to have a good communication ability is of great importance for all sorts of people. Social intercourse needs both a person’s specialty skill and his ways in communicating himself. Nowadays, the latter always play an important role.
- Have you ever taken any part-time jobs? What did you do?
??? Yes, I have. I have ever been a private tutor for a junior high school student. Every weekend, I go to her home and help her with English learning for two hours. Usually I help her to review what she has learned in school and check her work over and correct mistakes. I teach her how to read, how to write and how to learn. But most importantly I help her build self-confidence and find pleasure in learning English. I feel it is fruitful for my future job, because I benefit a lot by doing this.
- If you are to decide whether to further your study as a postgraduate student or work in a famous company, which one would you prefer? And why?
??? It’s a hard choice really. But if I am forced to choose one, I think I will choose to work in a famous company. There are two reasons.
First, I don’t want to become the kind of students who just know nothing and can do nothing except study in daily life. I find it's hard for them to communicate well with others because what they can talk about is their specialty, their study or the things happened at school. Sometimes, they lack the courage in adapting themselves to the society despite the fact that now they are college graduates with such a high diploma. They feel uncomfortable when they go out of the school for a job. And they tell that they lack experience for the job extremely, and missed many lessons about the complicated society. The knowledge they learn in school can't act well and they can't grasp the skills to work with the organization. Maybe this kind of students is not overwhelming in today’s universities. But they exactly exist. So I don’t’ want to be one of them----the favorable students in the ivory tower.?
Second, in today’s society, it’s really a troublesome thing to find a job in famous companies. Working in a famous company means you have an admirable and steady income, you have more opportunities to receive training on your major even on some other fields, you have a more solid foundation for your career development. Those reasons contribute a lot to my final choice to work in a famous company.
Of course, what I have said doesn’t mean that going on study is not important. Acquire more knowledge will benefit our future. While in my opinion, it’s advisable to be practical in our life than to just pursue high diplomas.
- If you can’t find a job in large cities, what would you do?
??? Finding a decent job in a large city is the goal of many university graduates, especially those who come from rural or isolated areas. But because of the overflow of work force in many large cities, this ideal sometimes cannot be realized for those graduates. Given the present fierce competition in job hunting, I think there are two choices for them to make.
First, accept the reality and try to work in a down-to-earth style. The reason is simple that working even in some small cities is also a kind of practicing your ability and exercising your potential. It’s a valuable experience in your career. You should have a proper attitude toward your job, and exert your best to do it well. Most of all, you should make full use of every chance in your work to improve your skills, accumulate working experience, and broaden your communication. By doing all of these, after a period of time, you will definitely be benefited, and have an obvious improvement in every aspect of life.
Second, you can choose to go on your study. This includes to pursue the post-graduate studies on the originate major, or change your major by choosing a more practical field. Nowadays it’s hard for some college graduates to find a satisfactory job. The reason is that some of their majors are too theoretical and lack practical meaning. In the meanwhile, some big companies in large cities prefer those multi-capable employees, that is to say, these employees can be competent in not only one area but more. From this requirement, we can see our graduates have more limitations and it’s urgent to equip themselves with a large scope of knowledge in their further studies.
9、It is full of fierce competition in job hunting, how to make you more successful in finding a job?
It is well known that finding a good job is an important issue. However, how to find a suitable job has become a noticeable problem in the society. For example, many people cannot find jobs, not because they don’t have the related ability, just because of the improper ways and skills during the period of job hunting. We know that finding suitable jobs also need some methods and techniques. In my point of view, I think we should know three aspects clearly before we look for jobs.
To begin with, try to know ourselves very well. It contains the scale of our knowledge, skills, personality traits, hobbies and health. Before finding jobs, we must have an entire acquaintance of ourselves, what kinds of jobs we are good at or not.
Secondly, we need to know the occupations and business that we are interested in. Ask about the content of the job, the nature of the job and the requirements of the job. We can get this information from those who have taken these kinds of jobs already, probably they could offer us a lot related and helpful information and advice in time. Besides, we could also get to the Internet to find more about the job description. On the other hand, we can get more indirect experiences from the failure lessons sometimes, which can prevent us from making the same mistakes; and we can also learn successful experiences that may greatly influence us in the future.
Finally, try to ‘sell’ ourselves. In other words, make ourselves impressive to others. On the basis of knowing ourselves and work, we can start hunting. Hunting jobs is the process of getting people to know us. We go to some links online, besides the information of the company, job requirements, work locations, and so on, we also need to set up a good image of ourselves. Seeking jobs is much like selling goods. If we want our customers to buy our products, we must tell them how advanced the quality is, how reasonable the prize is, how valuable the service is. At the same time, we should always raise the confidence that “I’m sure I’m competent to do this job.” Then we can try to sell ourselves in interviews; probably our excellent performance could be the best way to show our competence and suitability.
From the three aspects, we can briefly conclude that we need a good preparation before hunting jobs.
VII. Preparations for the Evaluation迎评准备
- How do you prepare for this evaluation of your university?
??? Well, firstly I’ve learned the purpose of this evaluation and it is significant to our university. Evaluation provides us more chances to learn and communicate with other universities. By evaluating, universities could clearly recognize their advantages and disadvantages, so we could better ourselves effectively. As a student, I must behave myself: go to class on time, listen to the lectures carefully, volunteer to answer the questions, and study harder to perfect myself.
- Who told you to come to attend this test?
??? The Department of Educational Administration allocated the students’ name lists to all the institutes, and then the teacher in charge of evaluation work in our institute asked me here.
- Have you received any training for the evaluation?
Yes, I have.
- What kind of training did you receive?
??? I read a lot of materials about our university and attend the lectures introducing the evaluation. Also, my classmates and I visit other universities that have been evaluated.
- What’s your impression of this university?
?? ?I think this university is really a good place to study in. Different from the middle school life, the college life depends on ourselves. We can choose to relax, to have a spare-time job, to go on working hard, or to fall in love. In a word, it is completely free. But the university provides us very good atmosphere to further our study. We all work hard here.
And the service of this university is quite good. I think our university is really a good university.
All in all, every minute in the university is exciting. We should cherish the time and strive for tomorrow
- What influence do you think such an evaluation may have? Is it positive or negative?
?? ?I think this evaluation is good. The problems may be impossible to be solved before it had been solved in these few months. And I think we could get a higher score in this evaluation, we students may have much more chances than before when we graduate from this school, especially when we are finding jobs. It is a positive thing.
- Can you benefit from such an evaluation?
??? I think we students should actively take part in the evaluation, for it can stimulate our sense of responsibility. Evaluation includes students’ self-evaluation of what you learn and how to learn. It also includes teaching process evaluation about what to teach and how to teach. Evaluation pushes the teaching forward. As the quality of teaching is improved, we certainly benefit a lot from such an activity.
8. Does the evaluation affect your normal teaching and learning?
Of course it will affect our normal teaching and learning, and here what I want to emphasize is that the influence from the evaluation is positive. The evaluation activity will make us more formal in both teaching and learning. I firmly believe that this kind of activity will improve our university to a higher level.
VIII. Debating辩论题
- Is it good to have one school campus or two campuses?
One school campus :
1) It’s more convenient. The teachers and students don’t have to travel a long way to class.
2) The university is a whole. We can sense the learning atmosphere and share it with a lot of people.
3) The facilities and resources are available to all.
Two school campuses:
1) With number of students increasing, one campus is too crowded and noisy and not sufficient to hold so many people.
2) Classroom buildings and dormitory should be in a separate area, or we may be disturbed by the chaos.
3) Students of different majors need different atmosphere.
- Is it a good choice to continue study/ work after graduation?
It is a good choice to work after graduation.
In my opinion, finding a job after graduation is the best way for me and it is also in accordance with my principle. To study is only to get a better chance to get a better job with a better starting salary. But we always say that if you only stand on land you will never be a good swimmer.
I have stood on land and watched people around me swim in the society for about 20 years now. I really want to jump into the water and feel a different kind of life.
On the other hand, although some students have studied for 2 or 3 more years, they still cannot earn enough money to buy a house. So I think work will be a better choice for me.
It is a good choice to continue study after graduation.
In my opinion, to continue my study will be a good choice after graduation. First of all, through further study, I can accumulate more knowledge and lay a more solid foundation for my future job. Secondly, nowadays, a higher degree, such as a master’s degree or even a doctor’s degree, has become more and more important in job-hunting. There are not much job opportunities for us graduates. What’s more, school is such a wonderful place that I’d like to enjoy myself here for another 2 or 3 years. So I’d choose further study after my graduation.
- Do you think it is good to study abroad or stay in China after graduation?
It is good to study abroad after graduation.
In my opinion, I think it is good to study abroad after graduation:
1). Studying abroad can provide me a better chance to get access to some advanced knowledge. Some countries, especially the developed countries, are advanced in certain fields, so I can learn from them and make better contribution to my motherland after I come back.
2). Studying abroad is a good opportunity to learn more about other countries, such as people and culture. We can also spread our own culture to them so that we can construct a friendly bridge between two countries and develop a good relationship.
3). After I come back, I will be more competitive in the job market, and will find a good job easily.
It is good to stay in China after graduation.
In my opinion, I think it is good to study in China after graduation:
1). I don’t have to take foreign language tests such as TOEFL and GRE. This can save me tremendous amount of time, money and effort, allowing much of my energy to be devoted to my academic goals.
2). The totally different surroundings may cause me a lot of troubles if I go abroad. The language obstacles, the strange roads, the unfamiliar people around me, all this may make me depressed. But if I stayed in my own country, I can stay with my family and old friends, and we can enjoy the kind of intimate relationship and comfortable family atmosphere which you cannot even dream of in a foreign country.
3). Going abroad right after graduation may add much burden to my family since I have no chance to earn enough money to support myself.
- Which is more important, learning more book knowledge or more about society?
Book knowledge is more important.
1). First of all, what we have learned from books are mostly theories that have been proved correct. We needn’t spend a lot of time and money doing experiments or making investigations.
2). The knowledge we learned from books can guide our practice. It may provide ethics for us to follow, theories for us to practice, entertainment for us to enjoy and so on.
3). Our traditional culture should be passed down from one generation to another. The book is a good carrier that can help keep our culture alive.
Society knowledge is more important.
1). Society is totally different from school. What we can learn from books are theories, some of which are not practical enough for us to cope with the society. When we go into society we may meet more new people, more new things.
2). Society knowledge is more practical. Sometimes book knowledge falls behind time and trend, or may not even be correct any more. But society knowledge can help us catch up with the present society.
3). The spirit of creation is very important. To study in society, to work in society can help people become more creative.
5. Which one do you prefer, living on campus or renting houses off campus?
Living on campus
I prefer living on campus, because there are lots of schoolmates there, we can study together and play together. Besides, it is safer and cheaper for us students to live on campus. It is undeniable that many dormitories are far from being satisfactory-small, shabby, noisy, stuffy in summer and cold in winter. But the merits of living on campus outweigh its demerits: By sharing a room with others, one learns how to understand, compromise with and help each other. Through more communication, one is better informed and thus enjoys more opportunities. Besides, a lot of educational facilities are near at hand and the accommodation fee is much lower than the monthly rent. Sure, if you rent a well-furnished room, you may live more comfortably and enjoy more freedom, but you are often lonely and insecure for lack of companions, and sometimes you might abuse your freedom.
Renting houses off campus
I prefer renting houses off campus, because:
1). It is undeniable that many dormitories are far from being satisfactory--small, shabby, noisy, stuffy in summer and cold in winter.
2). There are always 6 or 8 girls/ boys living in a small dorm. Different people may have different living styles. We may disturb each other easily.
3). If I rent a well-furnished room, I may live more comfortably and enjoy more freedom. I can arrange my time well for both study and life.
- Is it good to the environment protection to take a bus or ride a bike, if you want to go to another yard?
Taking a bus:
1). Taking a bus will be faster so that I can save my time to study.
2). Taking a bus is more comfortable, especially in bad weather, such as snowy days, rainy days or windy days.
Riding a bike:
1). Riding a bike is more environment- friendly, since bicycle is one of the few vehicles that won’t produce pollution.
2). Riding a bike may provide more freedom. Taking a bus, I can get off only when it comes to a stop and it is limited to its routes, but riding a bike, I can go and stop wherever I want to.
- In learning English, is listening and speaking more important, or reading and writing more important?
In learning English, reading and writing is more important.
As we all know, listening, speaking, reading and writing are four important language skills. Nobody can become a good language user without a full command of all four skills. Listening and speaking involve oral communication; reading and writing involve written communication. It’s hard to say whether listening and speaking come before reading and writing or vice versa.
Traditionally, reading and writing were considered more important than listening and speaking. This is because most communications with English native speakers were done through writing then.
In learning English, listening and speaking is more important.
As we all know, listening, speaking, reading and writing are four important language skills. Nobody can become a good language user without a full command of all four skills. Listening and speaking involve oral communication; reading and writing involve written communication. It’s hard to say whether listening and speaking come before reading and writing or vice versa.
With the development of globalization and international cooperation, there are more chances for us to meet English native speakers and communicate orally with them. Thus listening and speaking become more and more important. But it does not mean that reading and writing are no longer important. All four skills are equally important.
- Does on-line learning have more advantages or traditional learning have more advantages?
On-line learning has more advantages.
Online learning and traditional learning are two different modes of learning. Both have advantages of their own.
Online learning is a new concept in recent news. Online learning makes use of modern information and computer technology and is very appealing to young students, who easily take to new things. There is also more flexibility in online learning. It caters to students’ individual needs. Students can learn what one wants/ needs to and at one’s own pace. It’s different from the traditional lock step way. Slow learners won’t pull back fast learners. What’s more, online learning breeds the spirit of discovery learning. Students learn through a process of self-exploration instead of just taking in information passively from the teacher and textbook.
Traditional learning has more advantages.
Online learning and traditional learning are two different modes of learning. Both have advantages of its own.
Traditional classroom learning has it’s own advantages. The face-to-face oral communication between teacher and students and between students and students, the encouraging words from the teachers, the loud laughter at the same time on some funny jokes or gestures are things hard to find in online learning.
- In web-based English teaching and learning, is teacher more important or computer more important?
In web-based English teaching and learning, teacher is more important.
After several weeks of online classes, I was deeply impressed by how computers and the Internet can help us learn English. The computer and the new learning method have a great impact on me. Meanwhile, I find, despite the computer, the teacher still plays an important role. But which is more important? I believe the teacher is the conductor and the computer is only a tool. Only with the teacher’s guidance can we know what we should do and where we can find the keys. For example, our teacher will give us a checklist before each class. With the checklist, we know how to get prepared for next class, and then we will go to the computer or textbook to find solutions or other important information. So we benefit from both the teacher and the computer. But for myself , in web-based English learning, teacher’s guidance is more important.

In this new teaching mode, computer plays an important role. Without computer, we cannot learn online. Without computer, teacher has to go back to the traditional classroom and pick up chalks again. Without computer, it’s not so easy for us to find so much useful and up-to-date information. So in my opinion, in this new teaching mode, computer is more important.
10.Web-based English learning is beneficial for students to develop their autonomy.
Pros: I think web-based English learning is beneficial for us to develop our autonomy. Web-based English learning is quite different from traditional learning. It requires us to get prepared for class. Since we can get more information from the web, it really helps me a lot to search the Internet and get more background knowledge. During class I can take in what the teacher says as much as I can, and I can do better and become more confident. The more I get prepared, the better the outcome.
To make online learning more efficient, everyone needs to make a plan, schedule time and find strategies suitable for himself/herself, thus develop learning autonomy.
Cons: Web-based English learning is not beneficial to develop autonomy.
1) It makes it difficult for me to concentrate on study and to resist the temptation of movies or games.
2) It’s a waste of time to search information.
3) Face-to-face communication becomes less and less. Students are likely to become lonely.
4) Students rely too much on the Internet.
